Sarkozy: "The future of Europe in the hands of 12 wise people"

After the French referendum and before the bad compromise on the Reform Treaty will be reached in Lisbon in next days the French president Nicolas Sarkozy proposed (*) to convoke a "wise people's committee" to reflect on the future of the E.U. in 2020 and to report back in the first half of 2009. This proposal is not democratic and shows us the new Reform Treaty is not able to solve the structural problems of the Union.

European democracy 'sous embargo': draft IGC mandate unveiled

Constitutional TreatyJust few hours before the European Council kick off (with the aim to relaunch the European constitutional process after two years reflection) the new cafebabel blog "Europefrombelow" unveils to European citizens the draft IGC mandate. It's the document prepared behind close doors by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The draft IGC mandate "sous embargo" is widely circulating since yesterday through the press and the internet.

On the offensive for the Charter of Fundamental Rights - Etuc demonstration in Bruxelles

3000 trade unionists on 20th gathered the European institutions in Brussels in support of the Charter of Fundamental Rights being included in any new European constitutional treaty. A minority of governments are trying to reduce its significance or to keep the unsatisfactory ‘status quo’ whereby it is binding only on European institutions. The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) wants it to become binding on member states as well.
